The attached Unit Plan is a ten-day long unit about American involvement in World War II. The Unit Plan consists of three stages: 1) Desired Results, which includes the corresponding content standards, big ideas, and essential questions; 2) Assessment Evidence, outlining the assessments given to students that will measure their grasp of the learning goals and understanding of the content; 3) Learning Plan, which divides the unit into a day-by-day plan of study that shows which learning experiences students will have every day of the unit. The Learning Plan is followed by a cumulative list of resources and materials for all learning experiences included in the unit.
One of the assessments involves students using digital oral histories to learn about some of the content, which helps to facilitate innovative learning experiences through the use of technology (ITSE-NETS-T Standard 1a, c, d; InTASC Standard 3g, m; Standard 4g). Additionally, other learning experiences involve students physically leaving their seat/classroom, while others involve learning content from nonconventional sources (i.e. guest speaker). These kinds of strategies help students think about the content in an out-of-the-box manner through the different approaches used by the teacher (InTASC Standard 3b, d, f, i; Standard 4a, b, d, g, h, i, p, r). Also, the teacher presents a form of assessment (creation of mock primary source document) that is not typical or traditional, and is able to utilize student creativity and originality (InTASC Standard 5a, e, o, s).
